Chairman Petersen opened the hearing on SB26.
Mr. Siebers commented that the bill designates a portion of Kansas Highway 7 as the Senator Bud Burke Memorial Highway.
Brad Smoot, a local attorney, noting that a similar bill passed the Kansas Senate 39-0 the previous year, but was not considered by the House because the COVID pandemic prematurely closed the legislative session, recounted Senator Burke's life as one of honor, courage, and dedication. Mr. Smoot commented that Mr. Burke's years of service as a Senator, Senate Majority Leader, and Senate President reflect a life worth emulating (Attachment 22).
Chairman Petersen noted the written-only testimony in support of the bill by Senator Burke's daughters and by a colleague:
- Anna Burke, Attorney, Burke McClasky Steven (Attachment 23);
- Tim McKee, CEO, Olathe Chamber of Commerce (Attachment 24).
