Short Title

Requiring accredited high schools to provide a course of instruction in personal financial literacy.

Minutes Content for Tue, Feb 23, 2021

Deputy Commissioner Brad Neuenswander gave an overview and history of personal financial literacy in Kansas schools.  Over the past eight years almost 80,000 students have completed a personal finance course.  In 2013 there were 8,440 students; in 2020 there were 13,763.  He shared two sheets of information from Kansas State Department of Education on financial literacy in schools.  (Attachment 1) (Attachment 2)

The department is very pleased with the increase in students taking part in these important courses.  Neuenswander shared a letter from May 2015 between the Chair of the House Education Committee, Representative Ron Highland and the Chair of the Kansas State Board of Education, Jim McNiece.  The letter was in lieu of a mandate for all schools to take and pass a personal financial literacy course as a requirement for graduation.  The letter was sent to all school board presidents and superintendents; encouraging Kansas educators to develop a financial literacy curriculum.
