Minutes for SB75 - Committee on Education

Short Title

Adding an additional member to the board of trustees of Cowley county community college.

Minutes Content for Tue, Feb 7, 2017

Chairperson Baumgardner called the meeting to order.  She reminded the Committee that this Thursdays meeting was cancelled because the Senate would be in Chambers.  Chairperson Baumgardner also noted that the Committee would approve minutes at tomorrow's meeting.

Chairperson Baumgardner asked for a point of personal privilege for her three guest students from St. Mary's University.  Chairperson Baumgardner stated that she appreciated their attendance.  She noted that sometimes legislators wonder if students are interested in returning to work in small rural Kansas, and she was happy to report one of them wants to be a rural nurse.

Chairperson Baumgardner stated that the Committee would be looking at SB75 first.  Nick Myers, Revisor of Statutes, gave a brief over-view of the bill. Mr. Myers noted that the Cowley County Community College Board of Trustees can be seven or eight members.  (Attachment 1) (Attachment 2)

Mr. Myers stood for any questions on the SB75.   No questions were presented.  Chairperson Baumgardner stated there has been a Sumner County vote for taxation to fund a campus there, and this is what has driven this bill.

Chairperson Baumgardner asked if there was a motion for SB75.  Senator Alley motioned, and Senator Estes seconded the motion.

With no further questions, Chairperson Baumgardner asked for a raise of-hands to vote on the bill.

The Committee unanimously voted for passage of SB75.

Senator Pettey asked if the bill could be placed on the Consent Calendar.  Tamera Lawrence, Revisor of Statutes Office, stated that if it's unanimous, then they could discuss with a separate motion.

Senator Pettey motioned for SB75 to be on consent calendar and Senator Fitzgerald seconded the motion.  The Committee unanimously voted for SB75 to be placed on the Consent Calendar.
