Matt Sterling gave an overview on HB2498, He explained this bill prohibits governmental entities from prohibiting the wearing of tribal regalia and objects of cultural significance at public events. Additionally, the bill is effective on publication of the Kansas register.

Proponents

Representative Ponka-We Victors, District 103, introduced herself in her native language of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma and spoke as a proponent to HB2498, a bill in favor of traditional regalia for native tribes. (Attachment 1)

Representative Les Osterman, District 97, spoke as a proponent to HB2498 and described to the committee his native Sioux regalia and traditions.  (Attachment 2)

Liana Onnen, Chairwoman of the Prairie Band Pottawatomie Nation introduced herself in her native tongue and offered testimony in support of HB2498. (Attachment 5)

Sophia Suke, Native American Student, spoke in support of HB2498. (Attachment 6)

Comments were made and questions were asked by Senators: Oletha Faust-Goudeau and Ty Masterson.

It was noted that the House of Representatives passed this bill by a vote of 122-0.
