Minutes for HB2466 - Committee on Education

Short Title

Establishing the promoting advancement in computing knowledge act to increase the availability of computer science education in Kansas schools.

Minutes Content for Tue, Jan 25, 2022

The meeting was delayed by the redistricting debate on the House floor and was held very briefly starting at 3:15, as opposed to the normal starting time of 1:30.  Many of the Committee members were not able to attend because they had 3:30 Committee meetings.  This was an unusual situation as the hearing for HB2466 had many persons prepared to testify, some who had come from a long distance.  The Chairperson requested on the floor of the House that if members could attend, he would appreciate it.  Those who were able to attend were Representatives Estes, Murphy, Stogsdill, Huebert, Thomas, Samsel, Orr, Schmidt, and Sanders.

Katie Hendrickson of Code.org, flew in from out of state to speak to the Committee in person.  She shared what her company does and the services they offer students.  Code.org supports the funding that is so necessary to train teachers to teach computer science (CS).   Younger K12 students also benefit greatly from early exposure to CS.  Neighboring states are putting millions of dollars into CS education.  Arkansas has put almost $500 million dollars towards making sure all schools have the ability to offer CS.  (Attachment 1)

The Chairperson noted that this hearing for HB2466 will be rescheduled for February 1, 2022 at the 1:30 Committee meeting.  He adjourned the meeting at 3:25 p.m.

The next meeting will be January 26th.
