Of the three kinds of audits conducted by Legislative Post Audit, performance audits are the most common. These audits answer questions raised by individual legislators or legislative committees about potential problem areas in State agencies or programs. These audits take, on average, from six weeks to 16 weeks to complete, depending on the complexity of the subject and the needs of the Legislature.

In some cases, at the written direction of the Committee Chair, the Division may conduct special performance audits of very narrow topics. These "limited-scope" audits may take only one or two weeks to complete. Such audits may help the Committee determine whether problems exist and whether more extensive audit work is necessary, or may answer very specific questions for legislators.
